Foster a Dali dog

It takes a special kind of person to foster but that makes it all the more rewarding. By taking a rescue into your home and helping them prepare for adoption you can help us ensure that our dogs are physically and emotionally ready to take their next step into a home.

Help them get back on their paws

By taking care of a dog in your home temporarily, as a fosterer, you can help them get back on their paws. Many of our dogs aren’t used to living in family homes and/or have been mistreated in the past. Staying with an experienced foster family can help build their confidence and ensure that they settle in to their forever home successfully.

A Foster’s key skills include:

  • Patience and caring and giving space to help a dog settle in a new environment.

  • Sometimes house training and crate training (if necessary).

  • Helping a dog relax around humans and get used to touch, strokes and grooming.

  • Walking and exercising our pups and introducing them to new experiences.

  • Helping the dog learn how to play.

  • Teaching basic manners around food and humans.

What do I need to know before applying to foster?

  1. Although fostering is temporary, we cannot guarantee how long a dog will be in your care before moving on to its forever home. For most of our rescues, rehoming takes place within a few months but it could be longer, depending on a variety of conditions like the dog’s physical health and history. If you have commitments don’t worry, just be as honest as possible when chatting to our fostering coordinators.

  2. Some prospective fosterers worry that temporarily caring for a rescue dog means that they are abandoned again, once they leave their foster family for a permanent home. Although it can be difficult to say goodbye to a dog you’ve loved and cared for, remember that by fostering, you’ve given them an incredible headstart with a safe, secure chance to get used to living in a house. As well as an opportunity to learn that people can be gentle. Foster care is vital in helping prepare a pet for a new life in a permanent home.

  3. Fosterers are awesome! We know it can be tough saying goodbye and then doing it all over again, and that’s why we support our fosterers every step of the way. Without that incredible strength, we couldn't save as many dogs from the pounds so thank you!
